The work „I am Tank Man“ by Rainer Noebauer-Kammerer uses mass tourism in Český Krumlov to take a picture, which is actually banned in China, back to China via smartphone photography and social media. Thousands of Chinese pour into the historic city, armed with smartphones and selfie sticks. Based on a sculpture by Fernando Sánchez Castillo, an interactive intervention was created in public space, which invites the viewer to become part of the artwork. The subject is the image of the unknown rebel who defied a convoy of tanks in Tiananmen Square on the 5th of June in 1989. In the intervention, the observers can lend the Tank Man their identity by giving him their face and can then take pictures of it and share them. The shopping bag of the unknown man carries a reference to the Tank Man and China. The fact that so many tourists use the artwork has even taken the artist by surprise and is most likely due to the strategy the work is based on.

Die Arbeit “I am Tank Man“ von Rainer Noebauer-Kammerer nützt den Massentourismus in Český Krumlov, um ein in China verbotenes Bild via Smartphone-Fotografie und Social Media nach China zu bringen. Tausende Chinesen strömen, bewaffnet mit Smartphones und Selfie Sticks fotografierend, durch die historische Altstadt. Ausgehend von einer Skulptur von Fernando Sánchez Castillo, wurde eine interaktive Intervention im öffentlich Raum geschaffen, die den Betrachtenden einlädt, Teil des Kunstwerks zu werden. Das Sujet ist das Bild des unbekannten Mannes, der sich am 5. Juni 1989, am Tiananmen Square vor einen Konvoi von Panzern stellte. In der Intervention kann der Betrachtende dem Tank Man durch sein Gesicht, seine Identität geben, fotografieren und verschicken. Ein Verweis auf den Tank Man und China befindet sich auf der Einkaufstasche der Figur. Das dermaßen viele Touristen das Kunstwerk nützen hat selbst den Künstler überrascht, liegt aber auch an der Strategie, die der Arbeit zugrunde liegt.
